Job description

What You Will DoBe part of a dedicated and skilled Capital Projects team delivering complex, cost-effective projects safely, on time and within budget.

The organization strategically engages and collaborates with project owners, team members and key stakeholders throughout the Laboratory to ensure that project development, planning and execution comply with requirements and result in excellent project delivery.

This position will lead an Integrated Project Team (IPT) to conduct planning, engineering, procurement, construction, and startup activities including developing and documenting project scope, execution plan, schedule, and budget baselines; identify, assess, and manage project risks; and perform confidence assessments to develop contingency and management reserve estimates.

Serve as the focal point for internal and external project communications.

May serve as a Control Account Manager (CAM) responsible for planning, budgeting, managing, and controlling costs and schedule performance for a project or sub-projects.

Serve as a point of contact for project controls, including account scope, schedule, budget, and technical performance.

Lead efforts to ensure work packages realistically represent the duration and budget necessary to perform work.

Perform variance analysis reviews, determine cause and effect of schedule or cost variance and define achievable corrective action plans.

This position will report functionally to the Project Management Division Leader and will be deployed to executing organizations that are responsible for project portfolios ranging from under $50 Million to more than $1 Billion with some meeting the requirements of DOE Order 413.3B, Program and Project Management for the Acquisition of Capital Assets.What You Need Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience leading project teams in delivering construction projects including proactively managing project scope, schedule and budget including use of Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS).
  • Proven ability to identify project risks, developing risk mitigation strategies and corrective actions, and recommending risk acceptance/avoidance for all aspects of a project.
  • Advanced knowledge and expertise in engineering, procurement, construction, and other project related activities, including developing project execution plans, work breakdown structures, and work packages; managing to scope, schedule, budget, and technical baselines; and documenting baseline reports and change control actions.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain strong and effective customer engagement by interfacing with program, project, and line management to develop clear and executable action plans to address issues or needs.

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills that includes reporting on project status to senior level management, project stakeholders, as well as regulatory inquiries.

    Ability to promote an open communication environment to develop mutual trust and teamwork.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing plans or programs to meet or exceed contractual requirements, performance measures, regulations, and laws, including the ability to do so while operating within a highly sensitive national security and/or nuclear environment.
  • Education/Experience Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Scientific discipline from an accredited institution and 8 years of experience in two or more of the following functions: project management, project control, engineering, procurement or construction leading to a thorough understanding of the knowledge described above; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

    Desired Qualifications:
  • Experienced project manager with a strong background in line-item construction, electrical safety integration, and cross-functional team leadership-skilled in scope, schedule, and cost control under complex, high-stakes conditions.

  • Proficient in developing IWDs, expediting procurement, resolving constructability and supply chain issues, and integrating engineering, safety, and field execution inputs into cohesive, safety-focused project plans.

  • Proven expertise in developing and managing high-quality work packages and integrated work documents (IWDs) for complex, high-risk projects, ensuring alignment across disciplines and minimizing rework.

  • Skilled in work control integration, including scheduling, access coordination, readiness reviews, and use of project controls tools (e.g., Primavera P6), with a focus on safety, quality, and execution readiness.

  • Experience working in nuclear facility operations or other highly complex, hazardous operations, particularly as it pertains to the Los Alamos National Laboratory mission.
  • Experience working with federal clients at headquarters or field office level in a strategic manner to maximize client satisfaction.

  • Project Management Institute Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent.
  • Clearance: Active DOE Q clearance desired.
  • Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Walking, Climbing, Bending, Peripheral vision.

    Work Environment: Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM USA.

    All work locations are at the discretion of management.

    Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.

    If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.

    The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
